DEI users authentication credentials

Users databases

Because DEI has a set of specific network services that are independent from ISEP and IPP services, DEI also manages its own users database.

So there are two independent users databases in stake:

1. ISEP/IPP users

This database is used by services made available by ISEP and IPP, like for instance PORTAL, MOODLE, EMAIL, EDUROAM, and ISEPWLAN. For network services accessed through a DNS name, the domain in the DNS name is isep.ipp.pt or ipp.pt. On most of these services the username to be used on access is the email address (USERNAME@isep.ipp.pt).

2. DEI users

DEI specific network services use this database instead, for instance DEI VPN services, DEI SSH services, workstations in DEI laboratories, DEI virtualization and cloud services. For network services accessed through a DNS name, the domain in the DNS name is dei.isep.ipp.pt. On most of these services the username to be used on access is a simple username, not an email address.

Creating or resetting DEI user credentials

Users engaged with DEI (students and staff) with valid credentials in ISEP/IPP are encouraged to use the Create or reset your DEI user credentials service. In simple words, this service checks the provided credentials against the ISEP/IPP users database, if valid then the same credentials are enforced in the DEI users database.

Depending on the user's current status, some scenarios can be pointed out:

  • (A) A new user, never had before a user account in DEI - then a new user account is created in DEI users database, with the same username and password as the ISEP/IPP account. On the next visit to this service the user will be then on scenario (B).

  • (B) The user already has a user account in DEI and the username is the same as in ISEP/IPP - then this is a simple password reset case. Notice that users are not required to know the previous password in DEI, knowing the current password in ISEP is enough. Also, changing the password in ISEP has no automatic effect on the DEI account, in such a case, users should reset the DEI password again if they wish them to be the same.

  • (C) The user already has a user account in DEI, however, the username is not the same as in ISEP/IPP - in this scenario, the aim is renaming the old DEI user account to become the same as in ISEP/IPP. For students, old user accounts named as i?????? are automatically detected and renamed to 1??????. For staff, it's not automatic, DEI technicians should be contacted first to establish a mapping between names, otherwise, such user will end up having two accounts in DEI.
Remember that changing the username may impact on personal links being shared by the user.
